This course is designed to develop students’ information management skills in the area of human resource management. Students will be introduced to computerized information systems used to assist the management of human resources. The goal is to enhance students’ ability to apply HR Information Systems (HRIS) knowledge in problem diagnosis and investigation, as well as formulation of solutions supported by data and information. Topics to be treated include: Strategic HR Planning, HR Data Analyses and Reporting, Computerized HRIS, Using Employee Survey Data, HR Information Management, e-HR and the e-Workplace, HRM Policy Goals, New HR Paradigm, IT effects on HR, Virtual Organization and remote management, HR shared services, HR Call Centre Management, Web-based HR (Recruitment and Selection, HRD, Employee Relations, etc), Criticisms of Computer Mediated Workplace, HR Outsourcing and Case study
KHRC 303 Human Resource Planning 3 Credits
The course provides an understanding of the essential elements of the human resource planning strategies, processes, practices, and policies that can be used to enhance the effective management of people to ensure improved performance and a sustained competitive advantage for organizations. Students will acquire knowledge in analyzing, assessing and programming for human resource requirements of organizational business plans and strategies. Quantitative as well as qualitative concepts, approaches and techniques are emphasized. Topics will include Importance and Uses of HRP, the HRP Process, Forecasting Supply and Demand, Establishing HR Objectives and Policies, HR Programming, HRP Control and Evaluation, HRP and Strategic Planning, Steps in the HRP Process, Roadblocks to HRP, Focus Issues in HRP, and Succession Planning. The course will help students to design and implement efficient HR Planning systems and strategies, for the effective management of the employees of the organization to gain competitive advantage.
KHRC 401 HR Development 3 Credits
The objective of this course is to acquaint students with the purpose and responsibilities of the training and development function within organizations. The course provides a thorough look at human resource development by addressing how to assess and analyze the training needs, design, implement, and to evaluate training programmes for non-management and management employees. It provides students with perspectives on the significance of training and development for improved productivity, efficiency and overall organizational performance. The course focuses on discussing the key concepts, strategies, policies, procedures and practices that can be used to enhance the effective management of training and development to ensure improved performance and a sustained competitive advantage for organizations. It provides a general framework for examining and revising existing training programmes and for establishing new and viable training programmes. Topics to be treated include: Concept of Human Resource Development and Training, Roles of Contemporary Training, Training and Organizational Strategy, Training Needs Assessment, Training Design, Delivery and Evaluation, Induction and Orientation, Career Development, Managing Careers, Management Development, Actors in HRD, Comparative HRD Frameworks; Mentoring/Coaching and Learning Organizations.
KHRC 403 Labour Economics 3 Credits
The main objective of the course is to enable students to appreciate the economic dimension of labour as an important factor of production. Specific topics to be covered include: Demand Theory and Analysis; Supply Theory and Analysis; Demand and Supply for Labour; Human Capital Development; Occupational/Compensation Wage Differentials, Labour Mobility, etc.
KHRC405 Compensation Management 3 Credits
The Course emphasizes the application of compensation principles to organizational objectives and the strategic use of compensation systems for attracting, motivating, and retaining employees and the managerial aspects of paying employees at all organizational levels. It focuses on managing employee compensation in contemporary organizations. The course will examine the current state of compensation decision making and how recent theoretical and research developments inform compensation decisions. The course provides students with an experiential opportunity to develop the managerial skills necessary to design and understand the performance-based compensation and benefit programs for an organization. Discussions will focus on the strategic importance of compensation to the achievement of organizational goals; the relationship between compensation objectives and business strategy; the role of compensation in attracting, motivating, and retaining a high-quality workforce; recent theoretical and practical developments in compensation and benefits; the development and management of compensation systems and managing compensation for competitive advantage.
KHRC402 Public Personnel Administration 3 Credits
This course exposes students to the way public sector organizations procure, allocate and develop labour and how employer and employee relationship is established and maintained. Discussion will focus on the nature and scope of human resource management, and evaluation of theory and practice of public sector human resource management; human resource management in the Ghanaian public sector, human resource planning in the public sector; recruitment and selection into the public service; compensation in the public sector; downsizing in the public sector and collective bargaining in the public sector.
KHRC404 Strategic HRM 3 Credits
The course discusses human resource management strategies, practices, processes, procedures, and policies that are critical for the efficient and effective management of people to achieve organizational goals. The course is about both the design and execution of human resource management strategies. It aims at assisting students to think systematically and strategically about aspects of managing the human assets and determine what really needs to be done to implement these policies. The course addresses human resource topics from a strategic perspective and focuses on discussing key concepts and practices for improved performance and a sustained competitive advantage. Topics to be treated include: the concept of strategy, human resource strategy, strategic human resource management, phases of the development of strategic human resource management, elements of strategic HRM, HR Strategy versus Corporate Strategy, and HR Scorecard. Discussion will also focus on HRM systems such as Job Analysis, Job Design, Job Description/Specification, Job Evaluation, Human Resource Planning, Recruitment and Selection, Performance Management, Training and Development, and Compensation Management.
KHRC406 International HRM 3 Credits
The objective of this course is to provide students with a foundation of knowledge and practical skills, plus an understanding of the role of the HR profession with a focus on the issues and policies that affect international HR Managers. The course addresses the issues involved in the management of people across international borders and equips students who wish to pursue an international management career. International Human Resources Management (IHRM) will enable students to build a body of practical skills and theoretical knowledge – from the operational through the tactical to the strategic – around the management of organizations within different international contexts and then to apply this knowledge to management problems and situations that affect professional practice. The course explores relevant IHRM issues and what these mean for different groups of individuals and organizations at local, national, and international levels. The programme equips them with the ‘tools and techniques’ necessary to embark on a career in International Human Resource Management and to work within a multi-cultural business. Topics to be treated include: the Concept of International HRM, Challenges of IHRM, Global Staffing Challenges, Inter-country differences affecting HRM, Global Differences and Similarities in HR Practices, Implementing the Global HR System, Global HR Practices, Staffing the Global Organization, Compensating Expatriates, International Labour Relations, Terrorism, Safety and Repatriation
KHRC304 Performance Management 3 Credits
The course discusses performance management strategies, practices, procedures, and policies that are critical for the efficient and effective management of people to achieve organizational objectives. It focuses on the key concepts, strategies, policies, procedures, and practices that can be used to enhance the effective management of people to ensure improved performance and a sustained competitive advantage for organizations. Topics discussed include: the concept of Performance Management, the importance of effective Performance Management in achieving organizational goals; the processes and procedures for managing organizational performance; aligning performance management strategies and practices with the business or organization strategy; designing and implementing efficient Performance Management systems, strategies, policies, and procedures for managing the employees of the organization to gain competitive advantage. The course combines training, communicating, and motivating skills to challenge staff to reach higher levels of performance.
KHRC302 Industrial Relations and Labour Law 3 Credits
The course introduces students to industrial relations law with emphasis on Ghana Labour Law and Labour Act 651. Students will develop knowledge and understanding of the nature, history, sources, and the scope of the Labour and Industrial Relations Law in Ghana and be abreast with the current Labour Act. Coverage will include: Industrial Relations, Employment Protection, Contract of Employment, Fair and Unfair Termination of Appointment, Remunerations, Salaries and Wages, Trade Unions Formation and Certification; Compensation, Liabilities in respect of Industrial Action and Industrial Safety. Others include: Collective Bargaining, Collective Agreement Framework as a conflict resolution mechanism; Rights and Obligations of Employees and Dispute Settlement.
A certificate is awarded upon course completion.
